Avro Canada CF-100 CANUCK

The first full production-standard CF-100, the Mk 3, flew for the first time in October 1952, powered by 2948-kg (6500-lb) thrust Orenda 9s, and entered service the next year armed with eight 0.5-in (12.7-mm) Colt-Browning machine-guns in a retractable ventral tray. This armament was supplemented in the Mk 4A by wing-tip pods of 2.75-in (70 mm) folding-fin air-to-air rockets after the fashion adopted by the United States Air Force in the Northrop F-89 Scorpion. The Mk 4A also introduced an improved radar in the form of the Hughes APG-40 and a collision-course interception computer.

Increased power (Orenda 11s of 3230-kg [7275-lb] thrust) came with the Mk 4B Canuck which. with the 4A, became the most produced version of this pioneering ,all-weather fighter, a total of 510 being produced. Development, however, was not continued and the Mk 5, with all rocket armament, flew for the first time in 1955. For better performance at high altitude, 1.06 m (3 ft 6 in) untapered sections, were added to each wing tip and the tailplane area was also slightly increased this in fact raised the combat ceiling by 1219 m (4000 ft) Larger wing-tip rocket pods were also fitted to the Mk 5, which became the only model to be exported, 53 ex-Canadian air force models being sold to the Belgian air force, deliveries commencing in December 1957 United States security regulations prohibited further exports, as some US equipment was fitted.

With its then quite advanced fire-control system the CF-100 was an obvious candidate for missile armament and the proposed Mk 6 was to have mounted Sparrow II missiles and been powered by an after-burning Orenda 11IR engines.
