Formed as a Fighter unit at Dartmouth, Nova Scotia on July 1, 1942 with Hurricane aircraft, the squadron was employed on East Coast air defence. Selected in late 1943 as one of six home fighter squadron's for overseas duty, it was renumbered No. 443 Fighter squadron at Digby, Lincolnshire, England on February 8,1944.
